The absolute classic of European club cup football. Comparing two sporting comebacks side-by-side is a difficult task. Each game presents its own specific scenario with its own unique variables. No matter what the similarities, no two comebacks are the same.

Football fans around the world live in truly fortunate times having witnessed the two most ridiculous Champions League finals ever to be played – Manchester United’s 2-1 triumph on “that balmy night in Barcelona” (©Clive Tyldesley) in 1999, and their arch-rival Liverpool’s win on penalties against AC Milan in 2005.

To ask which comeback was better, more authentic, more remarkable, is to start down a path of endless debate which will inevitably be swayed by a preference for one team or another. Find me a United fan that raves about Istanbul or a Liverpool fan who replays Solskjaer’s winner over and over again and I’ll find you a dark room that you can lock them in until they recant their sins.

Briefly, and with no trace of bias, the way I see it is thus.

At no stage in 1999 were Alex Ferguson’s charges so comprehensively outplayed on the biggest stage in European football that their fans were forced to watch the game through their fingers with tears in their eyes. At no stage did the situation merit the phrase “game well and truly over and I hate saying that”. At no stage were United dead and buried.

After all, this is Manchester United. Comebacks are what they do.

If Liverpool had earned the right to come back out for the second half in Istanbul, it was certainly not by virtue of their first-half performance. What started out as an exercise designed to salvage whatever pride remained took on a life of its own and ended about an hour and a half later with Stephen Gerrard kissing Old Big Ears.

United succeeded, however, where Liverpool didn’t dare venture. Having secured their late equaliser, there was no need to chase an injury-time winner. Twisted is the latest horror action comedy from Writer-Director Chai Yee Wei.

Through Guan, two horny cabin crew, Cavin and Randall (starring Cavin Soh, Randall Tan) got their hands on some drugs. Their game plan was to spike the drinks of their colleagues, Linda and Tracy (starring Linda Liao, Tracy Lee) during a night out at the club. Anxious to get fresh of the girls, the eager duo stumbled upon a freak accident. The incident soon snowballed and led to a series of unfortunate happenings, bringing about a display of animalistic survival instinct.

Fa (starring Zhu Mimi) and her daughter, Yi Ning (starring Joey Leong) were victims of her abusive husband. Unable to tolerate the abuse and traumas, Fa killed her husband. The vengeful spirit of her husband swiftly possessed Yi Ning to create harvoc. To save her daughter, she seeks the help of two mediums, who further complicate the issue.

Among these seemingly unrelated characters, their paths crossed and intertwined Somehow, ill-luck seems to transcend the characters.

This is a story of individuals with fates intertwined and their paths collided. A series of twisted events that is a study on cause and effect and how our actions affect the people around us.

Who and What in On The Fringe

 The story begins with Tian Yibang (Li Nanxing), a juvenile delinquent in the 80s, a repeat offender in and out of the reformatory until he was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment and caning for robbery with aggravated assault. 15 years later, he is discharged from prison. Already in his 40s, he vowed never to tread the old path again. He longs to see his 15-year-old flesh and blood son but has no news of him.

Enters Liu Jiali (Fann Wong), a pretty lass whose looks belied the power she wielded over a large criminal organization. She was the confidante of Yibang’s buddy Moda, who mysteriously fell to his death two days before Yibang’s release from prison. After inheriting his “business”, Jiali had to fend off internal insurgences as well as threats from other gangs. Aware of Tian Yibang’s unwavering loyalty, she tries ways and means to rope Yibang back to her gang to assist her and to hunt down Moda’s murderer. Jiali though is unable to escape the long arms of the law and is eventually arrested and jailed for her crimes.

 

On the other hand, Shasha (Rui En), a blind but sanguine voluntary worker whom Yibang befriended at the halfway house, is adamant in steering him back the right path. She knows that Tian Yibang is upright by nature and had committed those crimes in a moment of folly. She is constantly encouraging him to turn over a new leaf and tries ways to prevent Liu Jiali from pulling him back to the underworld.

Leo (Zhang Yaodong) is a 21st century triad leader. Intelligent and scheming, he uses novel methods to conduct illicit business and is good at making use of others to achieve his own goals. Nursing a grudge against Shasha for indirectly causing the death of his best friend, he befriends her under the pretext of falling for her. Everything that he does is for his own personal vendetta. Meanwhile, Shaha is unaware of his motives until it’s too late.

15-year-old Yao Zhiyong (Edwin Goh) is the rebellious son of Tian Yibang. Together with some like-minded teens, he formed a gang called “WCS” (We Can Survive) and engaged in delinquent activities. Struggling with family, school and the pains of growing up, they choose to indulge in rebellious and anti-social behavior to vent their frustrations. Things began to spin out of control and they ended up being manipulated by a criminal organization.

With Shasha’s help, Tian Yibang is reunited with Zhiyong but never did he expect his son to be following in his footsteps. Despite his attempts to keep Zhiyong away from the world of crime, the latter resents this stranger who had appeared in his life out of the blue.

Unable to understand and keep up with technological advances coupled with a widening generation gap, the rift between father and son is further widened. A series of setbacks weakened Yibang’s resolve but motivated by Shasha’s efforts to reconcile them, Yibang was persuaded to persist. He eventually touches Zhiyong with his unrelenting sincerity and finally succeeded in keeping Zhiyong from taking the same wayward path like him.

On The Fringe <边缘父子> is a drama exploring the consequences of being a gang member, and the price you’ll pay for it. As reflected in the characters, they are trapped in a vicious cycle of violence and revenge, and realize that the price to pay is too high.

Adrian Pang and Selena Tan go back to where it all began

Dream Academy’s staging of ‘Into The Woods’ marks a homecoming of sorts for local thespians Adrian Pang and Selena Tan. The duo tells xinmsn what the award-winning musical means to them


Once upon a time in Stephen Sondheim's highly-acclaimed musical, Adrian Pang and Selena Tan, then theatre newbies who barely knew each other, met for the first time and were cast as Jack (of the Beanstalk fame) and Little Red Riding Hood respectively - the year was 1994.

Fast forward 17 years later, both theatre veterans come together again, this time as the Baker and the Baker's wife - a childless couple who longs for a child - in the new staging of Into The Woods, which opens on July 29.

Together with a group of other fairytale characters, they will be led on a magical journey of wish fulfilment and look for true happiness through the woods.

So what does it feel like to back in the same production yet playing their more mature roles?

"It's a dream come true playing the Baker's wife! I love it coz she gets to sing some of the most beautiful songs in the show," said Selena. "...and Adrian is fabulous as the Baker cos he's very funny, he cooks up all kinds of lines to make me laugh on stage!"

"It's everything I've hoped for and more. It's one of those musicals that never leaves you," recalled Selena. "Last year I watched the production in London and I just felt like it's time to do it again in Singapore so I called Glen Goei up and we assembled our dream team of everyone. And here we are, we get to sing Stephen Sondheim again!"

"Having done this production like, years ago, none of it is familiar, strangely enough. The rehearsals have been hard work!" Adrian let on. "There's a lot of humour in the piece but that same time a lot of heart as well, the piece still really speaks to me in a lot of very profound ways.

Added Adrian, "Now that I'm playing The Baker, I've to sing a couple of these songs and it's really hard to get through these songs without bawling coz they are really powerful songs."

Girls’ Generation shows their individuality at 2nd concert tour!

For all Girls' Generation fans out there!

The nine girls broke away from the group’s cutesy image, opting for bolder and sexier performances during their solo stages at their second concert tour

Cheeky winks here, pouty grins there and big hearts everywhere -- these were the 'gifts' from the girls of Girls' Generation, or better known as So Nyeo Shi Dae (SNSD), to the 8,000-strong crowd at the Seoul Olympic Gymnasium in Seoul, Korea.

At the invitation of Running Into The Sun (RITS) and the Korean Tour Organisation (KTO) Singapore, xinmsn was in Seoul to attend the 2011 Girls' Generation Tour over the weekend.

The press conference before the concert on Jul 24 started punctually, with the girls answering to every question posed to them.

Eighty-four Singaporean fans -- with the oldest fan being 77 years old -- travelled to Korea on a special tour package from KTO Singapore. When Girls' Generation was told about that, Tiffany - who was fluent in English -- spoke for the nine-member group.

"Thank you for flying all the way here for our concert. We'd love to see our Singapore fans if we have the chance to," she said.

The concert began at about 4pm KST, and what better way to start the show than to ask the fans what their wish was?

Decked in similar white, crocheted corset tops, tantalising shorts and knee-length boots, Girls' Generation kicked off the concert with 'Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)'. The group also performed Korean versions of their new Japanese singles 'Mr. Taxi' and 'Let It Rain' for the first time.

The nine girls delivered top-notched performances as a group; but it was during each of their solo performances that their individuality truly shone through.

First to conquer the stage alone was Hyoyeon, who appeared on stage dressed in a sexy white leotard. Arguably the best dancer in the group, the petite girl danced to Rihanna's 'Don't Stop the Music'.

Dressed in a rhinestone-studded tube dress with a long, feathered train, Jessica -- also known to fans as the 'Ice Princess' -- chose to show a more mellow side, as she played the piano and sang 'Almost', a ballad from Canadian R&B singer Tamia.

The usually adorable Sunny explored her sexy and edgy side when she appeared on stage in a black leotard and stockings, coupled with a pink cropped jacket, singing and dancing to Britney Spears' 'Three'.

Taeyeon and Tiffany later turned the concert hall into a cabaret, performing to 'Lady Marmalade' from the 2001 movie, Moulin Rouge. Naming Janet Jackson as her idol, Yuri performed the singer's chart-topping single 'If', exhibiting a tougher image.

Sooyoung surprised the crowd by doing the cha cha to the Pussycat Dolls' 'Sway'.

Maknae (youngest of the group) Seohyun brought the audience back to the '60s, as she sang Betty Hutton's 'Stuff Like That There' and tap-danced in a little black dress with an up-do reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn's in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Last but definitely not least, Yoona -- decked in a white shirt and bell-bottomed velvet pants -- shed her innocent image during her solo performance. The 21-year-old danced tantalisingly to Madonna's '4 Minutes', where she stripped to a pair of white shorts in the last bit of her dance.

The three-hour concert ended with Girls' Generation performing their past hits such as 'Gee', 'Oh!' as well as their debut track 'Into The New World'.

If you local SONES (fans of Girls' Generation) thought you're missing out, fret not. Running Into The Sun (RITS) will be bringing the girls and their much-awaited concert tour to Singapore, with the dates to be announced at a later time.

A talent lost.

Any fans of Amy Winehouse? It is of deepest regret that we had lost such a talented singer. Rest In Peace Amy..

“Rehab” songbird Amy Winehouse, who battled substance abuse problems and was found dead in her home Saturday, passed away alone in bed, says a friend.

Chris Goodman, a buddy and rep of Winehouse told TMZ Sunday that before she was found dead, the 27-year-old Grammy Award winner had expressed a desire to rest up. A security guard went to check up on her and discovered she was not breathing.

“She was in her bedroom after saying she wanted to sleep and when he went to wake her he found she wasn’t breathing,” Goodman told the celebrity news site.

The guard immediately sought help, but it might have been too late at that point.

“He called the emergency services straight away,” Goodman told TMZ. “He was very shocked. At this stage no one knows how she died. She died alone in bed.”

The British singer/songwriter, who is remembered for her sultry voice and musical talent, joins a series of rockers who died at age 27, including Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors’ Jim Morrison, and Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain. Winehouse’s cause of death has yet to be determined, but autopsy results are expected to be released early this week.

Over the weekend, Winehouse’s mother Janis told the Sunday Mirror that she’d seen her daughter the day before her death.

“She seemed out of it. But her passing so suddenly still hasn’t hit me,” Janis told the Mirror.

Referencing Winehouse’s struggles with drug and alcohol abuse, Janis said it was ““only a matter of time” before her daughter perished.

Last month, Winehouse scrapped her European tour, which included more than a dozen stops. According to People magazine, audience members jeered at Winehouse during a Belgrade, Serbia performance after she showed up an hour late to the concert, stumbled around, and slurred the words to one of her songs. The tour was canceled shortly after that appearance.

EXCLUSIVE: Ticketing details to SHINee’s concert revealed

For all the SHINee fans out there!

The official launch of the tickets to SHINee’s first ever concert in Singapore begins on July 30!

Recently, it was announced that Korean boy band SHINee will be rocking their way to the Singapore Indoor Stadium this September.

Ticketing for the concert on September 10 will commence on July 30.

6000 tickets will be available for the one-night only gig. Tickets - priced at $138 (partially restricted), $168 (balcony) and $218 (terrace and mosh pit) - will be sold at *SCAPE and via SISTIC. Each transaction will also be capped at a maximum of four tickets to prevent black market reselling.

On the official ticket launch date (Jul 30), tickets at *SCAPE will be made available at 9am, an hour earlier than SISTIC, which will release the tickets at 10am.

As the concert organizers Running Into The Sun and Conceptual are expecting hoards of young fans at *SCAPE, the first 500 tickets purchased at the youth organization will be entitled to a 10% discount (not applicable to $138 seats).

Out of the 2000 mosh pit tickets available for sale, 1000 of them will be available for purchase at *SCAPE. In the case where tickets available at *SCAPE are sold out, interested parties will have to get their tickets through Sistic.

According to a RITS rep, fans purchasing seated tickets through SISTIC and *SCAPE will only be allowed to choose the area they wish to sit in; not their desired seats.

Fans are encouraged to start queuing from 11.59pm onwards on Jul 29, when all barricades and security measures at *SCAPE are in place.

Five-member group SHINee consists of leader Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho and Taemin. They are set to perform their hits, including Lucifer, Ring Ding Dong and Noona Neomu Yeppeo (Replay).

GANTZ part 2 perfect answer

The Gantz: Part II: Perfect Answer Movie Trailer has premiered. Shinsuke Sato‘s Gantz: Part II: Perfect Answer (2011) stars Kazunari Ninomiya, Kenichi Matsuyama, Kanata Hongô, Natsuna Watanabe, and Yuriko Yoshitaka. Gantz: Part II: Perfect Answer‘s plot synopsis: Part II continues were Part I left off where “after trying to rescue a man on the subway tracks, two teens wake up in a room dominated by a mysterious black sphere that sends them to hunt down and kill aliens hiding on Earth”. We previously posted the Gantz (2011) Movie Trailer for Part One. The movie trailer starts out slowly but then the action kicks in around the half way point. I wish there were english subtitles for this movie trailer but the viewer gets the feeling that there is internal strife in the protagonist’s group.

In the sequel (which was preceded, of course, by both Manga and Anime versions of Gantz) Kei Kurono (played by Kazunari Ninomiya) works with other players involved with Gantz to revive those who died during the first film. Although details of the film are shrouded in mystery, we can clearly see that Kato Masaru, (Kenichi Matsuyama), will return as well as a bunch of new antagonists. Gantz is losing energy and it appears Tae Kojima, (Yuriko Yoshitaka), is a target for the next mission. Kei Kurono is now torn between saving the girl he loves or completing the final mission of Gantz.

International acts @ HTC Likes Awards 2011!

The inaugural HTC Likes Awards featured an international lineup of performances from Korean artiste Jay Park, twin sisters Jayesslee, local artiste Derrick Hoh and American band Plain White T’s

The first HTC Likes Awards was akin to an awards ceremony held within a small-scale concert for fans. Apart from crowning champions in different categories such as 'Best Music Parody', 'Fastest Fingers First', and 'Most Ideal Check-In', from the social media realm, fans were also treated to performances by artistes from Korea, Australia, Singapore, and America.

Twin sisters and Youtube sensations Jayesslee (Janice and Sonia Lee) flew down from Australia to perform in Singapore for the second time yesterday night. They opened the show with an acoustic version of 'Sunday Morning' which featured Janice on the keyboards, and treated the crowd to a flawless performance with their smooth vocals.

The Korean-Australian sisters continued crooning to familiar favourites such as 'Just The Way You Are', before ending it off with beatboxing and rapping to 'Price Tag'.

Despite the small turnout and poorly-filled arena in Suntec City Convention Hall, the crowd hyped up when homegrown artiste Derrick Hoh, who is currently based in Taiwan, appeared next with his nifty footwork and slow-mo dance moves to soft-rock ballads from his repackaged single.

A lucky girl was invited on stage for his second song as he mesmerized all present and crooned his way into her heart, with fans looking on in growing envy.

Korean-American singer and dancer extraordinaire took on the stage next, welcomed by piercing screams of love and adulation from his local fans. The crowd went alive and wild as many fans scrambled to the sides of the stage for an upclose view of the 24-year-old artiste. Performing three songs 'Nothin' On You', 'Abandoned' and 'Tonight', Jay posed for pictures and shook the hands of lucky concertgoers in-between singing and dancing.

The final five-member group, Plain White T's (Tom Higgenson, De'Mar Hamilton, Dave Tirio, Tim G. Lopez, and Mike Retondo) flew-in from America at 2am on Friday for their debut performance dubbed an 'unconventional first concert' in Singapore. The Grammy-nominated band strummed their guitars fervently to the hit song 'Hey There Delilah', and well-loved tunes such as 'Irrational Anthem', 'Boomerang' and 'Rhythm of Love', before the night came to a close.

The Cranberries LIVE in Singapore

It has been almost a decade since famous Irish band, The Cranberries, had their performance in Singapore. This year, they are back, determined to take Singapore by storm.

Felicia decides to be a busker!

A familiar face was spotted along the streets of Orchard Road last Tuesday!

Complete with an electric guitar and boom boxes, Felicia Chin rocked out with knee-high leather boots and loads of metal studs!

Her band members? Like the best pop groups out there, there's one member for every type of fan imaginable! Featuring... back-up singer Shaun Chen, and back-up dancer HK veteran Xia Yu! (Aunties beware)



Nah, you're definitely not going to bump into this motley crew of a band the next time you walk down Orchard Road, because this is a scene for upcoming drama Love Thy Neighbour!

In this scene, Wang Tian Hu (played by Felicia) busks to raise money for her neighbour Xian He (played by Ah Tak) when his family lands in dire straits. The production crew has even prepared a fake busker's permit for her! (Yes, because it's important to show the proper processes, even when acting!)



The transformation to a rocker is not easy. Other than donning tight black leather in the sweltering weather, there is of course eyeliner in abundance...




Felicia even cut her finger practising for this scene! It's a little healed now, but there was a really deep abrasion before.



All this while, her co-star is enjoying an iced coffee in the shade... (Ok lah don't blame Shaun, he did offer her a sip.)


He even sniggers at Felicia's expression when she was jumping and lip-synching with all her heart!


In the show, despite her garang personality, Tian Hu is mortally afraid of performing in front of a crowd! Her father (played by Xia Yu) brings her a mask to help with her stage fright!



Her amateur attempt still brings in a large crowd! Most of them are random tourists, who must be wondering why such a large group is staying to watch some girl lip-sync!







Even better, it also brings in loadsa money! (check out the $$ in Xia Yu's hands haha)
