“Rehab” songbird Amy Winehouse, who battled substance abuse problems and was found dead in her home Saturday, passed away alone in bed, says a friend.
Chris Goodman, a buddy and rep of Winehouse told TMZ Sunday that before she was found dead, the 27-year-old Grammy Award winner had expressed a desire to rest up. A security guard went to check up on her and discovered she was not breathing.
“She was in her bedroom after saying she wanted to sleep and when he went to wake her he found she wasn’t breathing,” Goodman told the celebrity news site.
The guard immediately sought help, but it might have been too late at that point.
“He called the emergency services straight away,” Goodman told TMZ. “He was very shocked. At this stage no one knows how she died. She died alone in bed.”
The British singer/songwriter, who is remembered for her sultry voice and musical talent, joins a series of rockers who died at age 27, including Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors’ Jim Morrison, and Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain. Winehouse’s cause of death has yet to be determined, but autopsy results are expected to be released early this week.
Over the weekend, Winehouse’s mother Janis told the Sunday Mirror that she’d seen her daughter the day before her death.
“She seemed out of it. But her passing so suddenly still hasn’t hit me,” Janis told the Mirror.
Referencing Winehouse’s struggles with drug and alcohol abuse, Janis said it was ““only a matter of time” before her daughter perished.
Last month, Winehouse scrapped her European tour, which included more than a dozen stops. According to People magazine, audience members jeered at Winehouse during a Belgrade, Serbia performance after she showed up an hour late to the concert, stumbled around, and slurred the words to one of her songs. The tour was canceled shortly after that appearance.
